The contract signing ceremony between Sun PhuQuoc Airways (part of Sun Group) and Boeing took place on February 18th (local time) in Washington D.C., witnessed by General Secretary To Lam and high-ranking leaders from both countries, during General Secretary To Lam's visit to the US to attend the Gaza Peace Council meeting at the invitation of President Trump.

The signing ceremony between Sun PhuQuoc Airways and Boeing took place on February 19th in Washington, D.C., USA.

The choice of the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner reflects Sun PhuQuoc Airways' long-haul flight network development strategy. Belonging to the 787 Dreamliner wide-body aircraft family, the 787-9 has a passenger capacity of approximately 296 and a maximum range of 14,010 km, allowing for continuous flights of up to 16 hours. This facilitates the opening of direct routes connecting Phu Quoc with the US, key economic and tourism centers in Europe such as the UK, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, the Middle East, CIS countries, Japan, and Australia in the future.

According to the manufacturer's specifications, the 787-9 saves approximately 20-25% on fuel and reduces emissions compared to its predecessor, aligning with the airline's commitment to efficient and sustainable operations. The airline expects that the introduction of this aircraft type into its fleet will support the establishment of direct intercontinental routes from Phu Quoc, thereby expanding the international connectivity of this destination.

Mr. Dang Minh Truong, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sun Group.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Mr. Dang Minh Truong, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sun Group, said that the cooperation with Boeing lays the foundation for building a world-class airline, synchronized with the luxury tourism and resort ecosystem that the group is developing. "We chose the Boeing 787-9 because of its superior operational performance and suitability to realize our vision of bringing Phu Quoc to the world and bringing the world to Phu Quoc," Mr. Truong added.

In the context of Vietnam ranking 7th among the largest trading partners of the US in 2025, with bilateral trade reaching nearly $171 billion, large-scale contracts in high-tech fields such as aviation contribute to promoting bilateral economic and trade cooperation between Vietnam and the US, demonstrating the proactive role of Vietnamese businesses in the global aviation value chain.

The $22.5 billion deal will help Sun PhuQuoc Airways enhance its intercontinental flight capabilities and participate more deeply in the US aviation production and service value chain through Boeing's manufacturing and supply operations. The order is expected to contribute to job creation and boost production in the US, thereby strengthening economic cooperation between businesses of the two countries.

The expansion of connectivity with a wide-body aircraft fleet is expected to facilitate tourism, investment, and trade between the two countries, contributing to the goal of enhancing competitiveness and strengthening Vietnam-US economic relations in a stable and sustainable manner.

According to Stephanie Pope, President and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes, the 40 787 Dreamliner aircraft is Sun PhuQuoc Airways' first direct purchase and also Vietnam's largest order for Boeing wide-body aircraft. "This order reflects a vision to connect Phu Quoc with the world and build a premium, full-service airline. The 787 Dreamliner is the perfect aircraft to achieve that goal," said Stephanie Pope.

According to Boeing's forecast, Vietnam is the fastest-growing aviation market in Southeast Asia, with growth of nearly 8% annually until 2030. With plans to expand its fleet to 100 aircraft by 2030, Sun PhuQuoc Airways aims to serve the high-end tourism segment and enhance connectivity between Phu Quoc and domestic and international markets.

Sun PhuQuoc Airways, invested and developed by Sun Group, follows a resort aviation model, focusing on direct flights connecting Phu Quoc with major tourism and economic centers. The airline has completed all necessary certifications from the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam to begin commercial operations. From August 2025 to February 2026, the fleet size will be increased to 10 aircraft. In December 2025 and January 2026, the airline recorded a high on-time performance rate among domestic airlines.
