On December 30, 2018, Quang Ninh Province simultaneously inaugurated the “trio of air–sea–land infrastructure projects”: Van Don International Airport, Ha Long International Cruise Port, and the Ha Long – Van Don Expressway. Four years later, the province continued to put into operation the Van Don – Mong Cai Expressway, making Quang Ninh the first province in Vietnam to possess a modern, inter-provincial expressway system. The Ha Long – Van Don – Mong Cai Expressway is widely regarded as opening up vast new development space for Quang Ninh as well as for the entire country.
Upon completion, the project created seamless connectivity with the Van Don – Ha Long – Hai Phong – Hanoi – Lao Cai expressway network, forming the longest expressway corridor in Vietnam at nearly 600 km. As a result, Quang Ninh has become the province with the greatest total length of expressways nationwide, at 176 km. This is also the only expressway route in Vietnam that connects three airports (Noi Bai – Cat Bi – Van Don), three economic zones, and one international border gate.
