Vietnamese Water Puppetry

PROJECT INTRODUCTION

Vietnamese puppetry is designed and staged to tell stories about the essence of Vietnamese life, labor, and beliefs to both domestic and international tourists. This is reflected in the title of the performance, "Trẩy hội" (Festival Procession), a traditional Vietnamese cultural feature during spring, coinciding with the show's premiere.

Performed by generations of elite artists and even very young artists from the Vietnam Puppet Theatre, the 8 acts will take viewers on an endless journey through Vietnamese culture, where they can discover the beauty of spring festivals, the life of rice farming, Vietnamese spiritual culture and beliefs, or the metaphorical image of the conical hat resembling moonlight, the boat on the water, revealing a rich, vibrant, and diverse culture.

The Vietnamese Puppetry performance in Phu Quoc is a unique blend of tradition and modernity, creating something new and captivating yet familiar and relatable. According to People's Artist Nguyen Tien Dung, the Spring Festival will combine various art forms and performances such as puppetry, water puppetry, and dance. The musical performances will also introduce visitors to other theatrical arts such as Cheo singing and Chau Van singing. In particular, the final performance, "Hello Vietnam," will feature a new arrangement using the flute, two-stringed fiddle, gourd lute, and zither – four traditional musical instruments – combined with a dance in ao dai (traditional Vietnamese dress) and conical hats.
