Quang Ninh Cruise Tourism Reaches Asian Scales, Attracting International Visitors

In the context of Vietnam's tourism industry recovering strongly after a period of instability, Quang Ninh cruise tourism stands out as a distinct bright spot. Not only maintaining its position as the "Northern Vietnam's coastal tourism capital," Quang Ninh is also gradually establishing its name on the Asian cruise tourism map, with an increasingly frequent influx of international cruise ships – even during the off-season, a rarity among many other destinations.

Infrastructure Advantages Lay the Foundation for Cruise Tourism Development
The key factor driving the breakthrough of cruise tourism in Quang Ninh is its well-planned and synchronized infrastructure investment. Ha Long International Cruise Port – Vietnam's first dedicated cruise port – allows for the reception of large cruise ships with separate, quick, and safe procedures. This is a competitive advantage that very few localities in the region currently possess.

In addition, the inter-regional transportation system, including the Hanoi – Hai Phong – Ha Long – Van Don – Mong Cai expressway, Van Don International Airport, and a convenient waterway network, has created an "infrastructure triangle" that makes it easy for cruise tourists to travel, visit, and experience the area in a short time.

Beyond just physical infrastructure, Quang Ninh has also proactively reformed entry procedures and strengthened coordination between port authorities, travel agencies, and local governments to improve the quality of hospitality. This helps international tourists have a positive impression right from the moment they arrive.

The off-season also becomes the peak season
Normally, cruise tourism in Vietnam is only vibrant from late autumn to early spring. However, in Quang Ninh, the boundary between peak and off-peak seasons is gradually blurring. In just the first six months of 2025 – a period considered quiet – the locality welcomed nearly 50,000 international cruise passengers, an increase of about 25% compared to the same period last year.

Many renowned cruise lines worldwide such as Star Voyager, Costa Serena, Celebrity Solstice, Viking Orion, and Mein Schiff have included Ha Long in their regular itineraries. Notably, many ships return to Quang Ninh multiple times a year, showing the high level of satisfaction of tourists and the trust of international cruise lines in this destination.

The stability of port arrival schedules has helped Quang Ninh become less dependent on seasonality, creating a steady source of revenue for the tourism industry and related services.

Diverse experiences, suitable for many segments of international tourists
One of the strengths that helps Quang Ninh's cruise tourism retain tourists is the rich ecosystem of experiences within a short travel radius. In just a few hours of stay, tourists can explore Ha Long Bay – a world natural heritage site, visit iconic destinations such as the Queen Cable Car, Quang Ninh Museum, Bai Chay night market, or the coastal tourist area.

In addition, cultural and community experience tours such as Yen Duc village (Dong Trieu), enjoying characteristic seafood cuisine, or exploring local life are also designed to suit the specific needs of cruise ship passengers: short but with a deep and enriching experience.

The harmonious blend of nature, culture, entertainment, and cuisine has made cruise journeys in Quang Ninh not just a stopover, but a memorable experience for international tourists.

Strategic direction to make cruise tourism a key sector
Clearly defining the role of cruise tourism in its long-term development strategy, Quang Ninh is gradually making this type of tourism a pillar of growth. By 2025, the locality aims to welcome approximately 70 cruise ships with nearly 90,000 international tourists, an increase of about 30% compared to the previous year.

Furthermore, by 2030, Quang Ninh aims to welcome 26 million tourists, including 9 million international tourists, making tourism a truly leading economic sector. To realize this vision, the province has been developing dozens of new tourism products, focusing on types suitable for cruise ship passengers such as cultural tourism, island and beach tourism, high-end resorts, and heritage experiences.

The fact that many major cruise lines include Ha Long in their annual itineraries not only signifies the number of visitors but also shows that Quang Ninh has entered a new phase of development – where cruise tourism is no longer a short-term trend, but a driving force for sustainable growth.

With modern infrastructure, high-quality tourism products, and a clear development strategy, Quang Ninh's cruise tourism is gradually reaching Asian standards. Even during the off-season, international ships regularly dock in Ha Long, creating a year-round "golden season" for the local tourism industry and affirming Quang Ninh's increasingly solid position on the global cruise tourism map.
